Student Spotlight: Emily Allen

by Mackenzie Bowman-Todd, reporter

FAIRHOPE, Ala.– Student Emily Allen does it all from National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club, French Club, Art Club, National Art Honor Society, German Club,  Sailing Team,  Archery Team, Fairhope Yacht Club Junior Board member, Bright Minds club, Psychology Club, Girls Bible Study, IB Underclassman Mentor, Volunteer Sailing Instructor, Fellowship of Christian Athletes to being a member of National Society of High School Scholars.

Since fifth grade, student Allen has been sailing. Although she is no longer sailing, this year she is still involved with the yacht club working with coaching and teaching kids how to sail.

Outside of school, she enjoys coaching and teaching kids and seeing their faces light up when they can figure out a task or a concept.

Becoming independent and basing actions on perseverance and patience is a key life lesson when sailing, as the sailor is in control of his/her own boat, while also controlling his/her speed against the wind.

Love for her hometown… Emily Allen admires the beautiful Mobile Bay at sunset. She has always enjoyed being at her favorite place. Submitted photo.

Staying involved in extracurriculars since freshman year, Allen is president of the French club and a senior representative of Key Club. She is also an ambassador for the University of Alabama Early College helping with events, and speaking on student panels.

Allen has also been a part of the International Baccalaureate [IB] program at Fairhope High School for four years.

“I actually love IB, but pre-IB, the freshman and sophomore years were the hardest, with it being a transition stage and learning to become adjusted to the schedule,” Allen said.

However, the opportunities that have opened up for Allen through IB are incredible, once she was in the preferred classes.

“[My motivation] is my IB peers, as we have become our own family, keeping each other on top of our schedules and motivated. Along with my friends who are proud of my accomplishments,” Allen said.

Allen maintains her rigorous schedule with her two different planners and a weekly to-do list. Along with her friends to keep her going, there are endless possibilities with her for the future.
