FAIRHOPE, Ala.- FHS Girls Varsity Soccer played its season opener versus Oak Mountain on February 1. Oak Mountain won with a score of 1-0. During the last two minutes of the game, Oak Mountain scored off a free kick, sealing their victory.

“As coaches, we were very encouraged by what we saw last night and the team’s prospects for the season,” said assistant coach Benjamin Monk.

The team has played in the final four and the state championships over the past two years. Since then, the team continued to work both defensively and offensively.

“We played well throughout the game. It was a hard game and even though we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, we should still be very proud of ourselves because of how we played as a team,” said sophomore Mary Marshall Roberts.

Although the Lady Pirates did not win their sportsmanship and effort was evident throughout the game. Outside back, Emma Coffey continuously stole the ball from the opposing team leading her teammates to more shots.

“We scheduled that game against Oak Mountain because we are very confident in our team and wanted them to see that they can play with the best teams in the state and last night just reinforced what we as coaches already knew,” Monk said.

Throughout the game, FHS girl’s varsity soccer was tied with Oak Mountain. Each team bounced back and forth shooting and almost scoring.

“It was our first game and we do need to work on communicating more but overall having 0-0 for most of the game against the top team in the state is really good,” said sophomore Hope Wood.

This team continues to practice with the intent of growth and improvement. The players and coaches continue to show pride for their team and anticipate their game this coming Friday in Foley against Athens.
