Varsity volleyball wins second game of season

by Riley Wootten, junior editor

FAIRHOPE, Ala.— FHS Girls Varsity Volleyball played its second game of the season against St. Michaels on September 5. The Lady Pirates won both of the two sets played with a score of 25-17 for the first set and 26-24 for the second set. The Lady Pirates won the final gamepoint after senior outside hitter Brooklyn Ewart served an ace securing the pirates victory.

“In order to win games we find it most important to focus on our best aspect which is serve and serve receive. No matter the size or power of a team, serve and serve receive will always win matches,” Ewart said.

This skill helped lead the Lady Pirates to victory and won them many points from serving and being able to return the majority of the opposing team’s serves.

“Our team prepared for this game by not only working together but cleaning up our offense in practice to be able to work on different sets in the game,” said junior setter and Maxpreps player of the match, Libby Rogers.

During the game, Rogers demonstrated this practice by continuously setting the ball over the net and into the opposing team’s openings in order to throw them off and secure more points for The Lady Pirates.

“To prepare for this match we came together as a team. We had no distractions and focused on ourselves, what we needed to improve on from the last match and our opponents ahead of us. We stayed engaged in the JV’s match and the match we were about to play,” said senior defensive specialist, Morgan Benson.

Throughout the match, both teams kept up with each other and rallied for almost every point. The Lady Pirates and The St. Michaels Cardinals were quick on their feet and continued to keep the ball up.

“Our team came together and discussed our areas of expertise and concern. We talked through the challenges we may face and our goals for the game. I think our determination, communication and support is what truly helped us win the game,” said junior outside hitter, Addison Cosgrove.

This team continues to apply their practice, hard work and teamwork into their games. The Lady Pirates anticipate a great season and upcoming game this Tuesday against Foley.
