FAIRHOPE, Ala.— On Sept. 30, FHS Girls Varsity Volleyball played the Bayside Admirals at home and won a tight game with a score of 3-1. This win qualified them to host the area tournament and placed them at third in the 7A region.
“I think our team secured the win by executing during crucial points, serving strong and playing to our strengths and Bayside’s weaknesses,” said Libby Rogers, senior setter.
The Admirals took the lead in the first point of the match with a side-out. The Lady Pirates tied up the score 13-13 mid set, however the Admirals won the first set with a score of 17-25.
“Bayside is one of the best volleyball programs our state has ever seen. To be able to play with them, let alone defeat them on our home court with the hosting area on the line was one of the most rewarding moments our program has had in recent memory,” said Daniel Kalmar, head coach.

The Lady Pirates bounced back in the second set and led the score 7-6 with the Admirals one point behind them the duration of the set. Senior outside hitter Gabi Berlage spikes the ball over the net tying the game and winning the second set with a score of 25-23.
“The exhilarating energy from inside the gym allowed us to play cohesively, with intense hustle, and united us through the game leading to our success,” said Addison Breazeale, senior defensive specialist.
The rivalry and scores throughout each match were close and competitive equalling an intense game from both teams. Outside hitters, Brooklyn Wild and Berlage’s kills along with Rogers setter attacks over the net led the Lady Pirates in score.
“Having eruptive plays and a strong attitude led us to win the game. The team carried a competitive attitude and played the most together we ever have, allowing us to only excel from here,” said Paige Benson, junior defensive specialist.
In the third set of the game, determining who takes the lead, the Lady Pirates tied the score 22-22 in a competitive rally earning the serve back. Berlage spikes the ball over the net winning the set with a score of 25-22.
“This game served as a testament to our players’ yearlong commitment and preparation,” Kalmar said.
The Lady Pirates and Admirals tied with a score of 19-19 in the last set with Fairhope needing to win one more set. Bayside led at a score of 22-23 until an out serve pushed them back giving Fairhope the chance to serve and win. Rogers served the final gamepoint and Bayside hit an out ball during the intense rally securing a win for the Lady Pirates.
