Daniel Kalmar: A Joke Turned Into a Career

He tried out for the boys’ volleyball team as a joke in middle school; however, a couple of laughs later, he found a genuine passion for the sport. What started as a comedic decision quickly turned into a defining part of his life, shaping his goals and future career. From Dallengrove, Illinois, Daniel Kalmar, now the head coach of the volleyball team, decided to take a significant step in both his personal and professional life.

Kalmar moved to Fairhope, Alabama, in the fall of 2023 to teach and coach at Fairhope High School, bringing with him experience, enthusiasm, and a commitment to help on and off the court.

Kalmar has always had a passion for sports, and after his unexpected volleyball success in middle school, he continued his journey beyond grade school. He sought higher levels of competition and responsibility. In high school, he dedicated time to training, studying, and learning from coaches, which gave him a better understanding of the game. This early start laid the groundwork for his future role as both a player and a coach.

“Ever since then, I have fallen in love with the sport. Since the sixth grade, I’ve coached it, I’ve played it, I’ve managed it,” Kalmar said.

Competing is a key factor in his drive, not only in volleyball but in life. Whether he is on the court coaching a tight match or in the classroom guiding students through material, Kalmar approaches each situation with the same competitiveness and determination to succeed. He has spent years investing in school, volleyball, and his dynamic with his students.

“I love the competitive factor of it, and then, probably more importantly, I love the people I get to do it with,” he said.

Kalmar has cultivated strong relationships with his team and deeply appreciates his players and the goals they share. He strives to build trust and open communication, encouraging his athletes to support one another and be accountable.

Kalmar credits the team with helping him ease into the transition of moving to a new town. Coming to Fairhope meant adjusting to a different community, culture, and routine, but his players welcomed him.

“Kalmar has made an impact on the team through organization and positive problem-solving skills,” said Addison Cosgrove, senior volleyball player.

No matter the situation, Kalmar follows through, pushing his players and coaches closer to their goals and always leaving a beneficial impact.

“Coach Kalmar is very detailed, which makes practice easy,” said Daniel Collins, assistant volleyball coach.

Kalmar’s goals for a healthy environment allow his players to thrive and push themselves to their best abilities. Volleyball can create stressful situations; coaching in a way that fosters a safe space is valued not only by the players but also by the coaches around him.

“It’s definitely given me a little notoriety in the volleyball coaching world. It’s a pretty tight-knit community, and it’s also made me feel very involved in our community and in our school,” Kalmar said.

Kalmar practices his organizational skills not only on the court but also in the classroom. He effectively connects this to his AP Geography class, managing to organize units, oversee long-term projects, and work around his personal schedule. He balances coaching responsibilities, grading, and class preparation, demonstrating a positive and attentive attitude.

“He helps us with great communication skills and has helped us make a positive impact on our culture,” said Sarah White, junior.

Kalmar constantly invests effort into the team as well as his students, applying his competitiveness and determination on the court and in the classroom. Being an AP Human Geography and U.S. History teacher means he has to maintain a balanced schedule.

Between unit tests and volleyball matches Kalmar never fails to be prepared. He works hard for his goals as well as the students and players he teaches. Moving to Fairhope started a new life chapter for Kalmar, giving him a place to grow and thrive. Kalmar’s love for Fairhope High School always shines through in his efforts to help the community.
