FAIRHOPE, Ala.— On March 27, National Art Honor Society students Jillian Surla and Kayliegh Sprute painted windows of The Haven, Fairhope’s local animal shelter, as an ode to volunteers who dedicate their time to help the shelter and the community of Fairhope.
“The Haven invited Fairhope students to participate as a way to bring the community together, highlight their creativity and honor the dedicated volunteers who make a difference,” said Kimberly Stewart, office manager.
The Haven has granted Fairhope students many opportunities to gain service hours, including the chance to showcase their artistic abilities and gain volunteer experience in painting their windows.
“I like art, and I felt this would be a good opportunity to reach out more to my community,” Sprute said.
Surla and Sprute spent their Thursday morning painting cats and dogs on windows in support of Volunteer Appreciation Month. Both students were granted service hours and the opportunity to volunteer in their community.
“Mr. Baggett had asked Kayleigh and I if we were interested randomly one day while I had been in his class since he was trying to find some students that would be up to the task,” Surla said. “I said yes because I love painting, I love animals and If I can help these animals find a family by doing something I enjoy, it would be the best thing in the world for me.”
These students took quick action to help out The Haven and personally asked Principal Jon Cardwell for approval to work on their art during school hours.
“Their artwork serves as a meaningful way to give back while celebrating those who work hard to help animals in need,” Stewart said.
This act of service highlights the importance of getting involved in your community and wavering support for those who need it the most. These students stepped up to help the shelter and magnified the hard work local volunteers contribute in serving the community of Fairhope.
