Fairhope High School athletes commit to the next level

Fairhope High School hosted its annual signing ceremony on Tuesday, April 22, in the gym to commemorate students who are moving up to play sports on a collegiate level.

Signing day is when students can formally sign agreements with college athletic programs in front of friends and family. This ceremony is a way for students, staff, and families to congratulate athletes for their hard work and dedication.

A wide variety of athletic programs at Fairhope High School had athletes commit, such as cheer, volleyball, track, baseball, soccer, softball, football and basketball.

Assistant Principal Josh Howell led the ceremony and gave a speech about how proud he was of the student athletes for their successes.

Howell said that between school, practices and games, athletes have to balance their workload, which can be very challenging.

These outcomes don’t just show how great the students are, but the faculty as well. The ceremony also honored those who helped to encourage and support students on their journey through high school athletics.

“Teachers, coaches, parents, grandparents, friends, relatives, the community of Fairhope provides fantastic academic and athletic resources for our students. It’s a team effort,” Howell said.

Coaches of each player shared stories and accomplishments of their athletes. They wanted to recognize the many aspects that make good athletes.

On behalf of senior soccer player Sadie Sparks, Coach Benjamin Monk spoke of her persistent character and uplifting qualities. He has worked with her since she was a freshman and has seen the way she has grown throughout the past few years.

“As she gained more experience, you could see her confidence in herself grow; she now demands more of herself,” Monk said.

For these coaches and players, it’s not just about performance but also about character.

“She’s always uplifting to her teammates, and to see her positivity with teammates who are struggling, uplifts everyone around her,” Monk said.

Sparks is going to continue to play soccer under head coach Brian Person at the University of Mobile.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, supporters took pictures with the signees and conducted interviews about their experiences.
