Fairhope West PTO hosts inaugural back-to-school bash

FAIRHOPE, Ala.- On Aug. 22, Fairhope West Elementary staff held its first Back to School bash at the Haltstead Amphitheater from 5 to 8 p.m. Sponsored by Sweet Water Dentistry, the event helped raise money for the Fairhope West Elementary Parent Teacher Organization.

From fun fair games to live music and loads of fun and food, the bash created a fun way to kick off the new school year. Locals invited friends and family to participate.

“I think this event is a great way to bring the community together at the beginning of the school year,” said Alison Long, co-host.

Various food options were offered such as Mr. Rooster Taqueria, It’s all Good and Cool Beans Ice Cream. Some participants brought their own cooler of their meal choice and ate picnic style.

Sweet Water Dentistry’s booth featured fair-style games such as cornhole with various prizes to win, some of which included frisbees and Stanley cups.

“This event is important for the schools to get everybody in the community ready for the new school year,” said April Wilson, Sweet Water Dentistry booth manager.

Live music started at 5:30 p.m. Participants danced featuring local artists, The Bailiwicks and Emily Stuckey.

The Bailiwicks, a folk-style band inspired by a Gulf Coast vibe, featured bluegrass, what they call “baygrass” for a fun twist.

Emily Stuckey, a singer and songwriter from Fairhope, writes her own music but also does covers of well-known hits.

Tickets ranged from $25 for adults, $5 for young adults and teens and free for all kids 12 and under.

“I love getting to know the parents of my kids’ friends and just supporting our schools and seeing everyone outside and having fun,” said Marrisa Thetford, PTO representative.

Kids laughed and played with the local community and even sparked new friendships.  The Bash created a family-friendly way to start school and helped kids get into a positive mindset about entering the new year.
