Fried up goodness…The smell of fried tortillas and cheese dip made every mouth at the table water. The dish came with three flour tortillas and a choice of either beef, shredded chicken, or carnitas inside them. (Audrey Parsons).

Cactus Cantina sets perfect casual dining experience

In need of a quick dinner with good food? Fairhope’s Cactus Cantina is the way to go! Offering classic Mexican and picky-eater-friendly options, Cactus Cantina is nothing like an average Mexican restaurant.

On Saturday evening, my friends and I were celebrating a birthday, and decided we wanted to go out for dinner. We called several places, but none could accommodate our party of eight. We all agreed on trying Cactus Cantina. Boy, was it the right option.

We arrived at around 6 p.m. and were immediately greeted with a smiling face from the hostess, who was very diligent in getting us seated. I apologized for the short notice, and she told us it was no problem, immediately getting us seated at a large table outside in the courtyard. String lights hung outside gave the courtyard a vintage and cozy backyard look.

After sitting for just a few minutes, we were greeted by our server, Devon, who began by serving us complimentary chips and salsa and promptly took our drink orders. One of my friends bought a large cheese dip that was simply divine for our table.

Our server was very patient and kind with our table, as many of us were on a budget and had no idea what to get. He provided us with suggestions and gave us some time to consider our options. After everyone decided on their meals, our server came and took everyone’s order. I ordered the beef Flautas, a side of rice.

A food runner came out in about 15 minutes, and considering our party size, it was pretty reasonable. My mouth watered as he began passing the meals out. The food came out perfectly, and everyone was satisfied with their dishes.

My friend and I went to find the bathroom as our server came outside with a sombrero and a special birthday dessert topped with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. He told us to go back to our table as the front of house staff came out to sing happy birthday to the birthday girl.

The total for the drink and entree came out to $20.37 plus tax, which might seem expensive, but the portion size made up for it. I was full after eating and had leftovers. Our server cleared our plates after we ate and told us that we could stay as long as we’d like. Fifteen minutes later, our group decided to head to the next location. As we were leaving, multiple friendly faces said goodbye.

All in all, Cactus Cantina was the place to go for our birthday celebration, and is not just an average Mexican restaurant. It was a great experience with even better food and memories. My friends and I rate this a 5/5 as we really enjoyed ourselves. Cactus Cantina can count on my business again in the future!
