Junior Beau Underwood, founder and president of 3D printing club, held the Fairhope High School’s first 3D Printing Club meeting Dec 11, during sixth period.
“The plan is to meet every other week and just 3D print stuff and expand everyone’s 3D modeling abilities,” Underwood said.
During the meeting students learned how to design a Christmas ornament using a software called OnShape. The ornaments were oval shaped and had personalized writing on them. Some members wrote “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” on theirs.
OnShape allows for a designer to interpret an image or design and develop it into a 3D model that can then be interpreted by a 3D printer.

“I spent time thinking about what we were going to make then made a vague model on OnShape,” Underwood said.
Club members enjoyed complimentary snacks.
“My favorite part was getting to watch and help others make their ornaments,” saidJacob Sasser, junior. “I hope to see a few more faces and I hope to see more people of different backgrounds come in.”
Anyone is welcome to join the club and there is no 3D printer needed. G-code files are what the group is going to use and convert to make the 3D prints.
“The plan is for the people who don’t have 3D printers to send their G-code file to the members that do so they can print the files for them,” Underwood said.
To join the club one should join the Google Classroom or contact a member of the club.
