Guns should be restricted

The Second Amendment of the Constitution should be amended to restrict guns as the effects of gun violence are becoming more apparent in today’s society.

Guns should be restricted as that would mean less frequent mass shootings. Paul Reeping, director of research at Vital City and a gun violence prevention researcher, found that for every instance of relaxation in a state’s gun laws, the rates of mass shootings in that state increased by 11.5 percent.

On the website Vital City, Reeping writes, “the trend of more non-restrictive laws being linked to more mass shootings is actually gaining momentum and does not seem to be stopping any time soon.”

Guns should be restricted as that would mean less domestic violence with women. According to the Center for Gun Violence Solutions, domestic violence offenders often have criminal histories but may not have been convicted of crimes of domestic violence.

As such, by passing and implementing firearm prohibitions and policies focused on anyone with a violent misdemeanor conviction, we can save lives and help women from dangerous situations.

Guns should be restricted as it would decrease firearm-related deaths. Eric W Fleegler, pediatric emergency physician and health services researcher, explains, “a higher number of firearm laws in a state are associated with a lower rate of firearm fatalities in the state, overall and for suicides and homicides individually.”

The Second Amendment of the Constitution provides that, “a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” However, the second amendment should be amended to restrict the possession, ownership and use of firearms.

No matter what, gun violence will still happen but amending it would be a step forward toward the right direction.
