FAIRHOPE, Ala.- Fairhope’s Varsity Boys Basketball team defeated Gulf Shores, 74-49, on December 2, bringing their record to 4-0.

Junior Trey Garner scored a quick two with a fast break dunk early in the first quarter.

“It is really important to start off strong so we can get momentum going into the rest of the game to take pressure off of us,” Garner said.

Jackson Gulley ended the first quarter with a buzzer-beater 3-point shot to make the score 26-20.

“Scoring at the start puts pressure on the other team early, and that’s what we want. Big plays get everyone on their feet to celebrate, which brings everyone together,” said Knox Lawson, sophomore basketball player.

Going into the locker room at halftime with a score of 37-29, the Pirates adjusted their lineup after Gulley suffered a knee injury at the end of the second quarter. Junior Braden Bradley and senior Marc Howard locked down defense to maintain the lead in the second half.

Lay it in…Junior Knox Lawson goes for a layup early in the third quarter. Lawson went to the free-throw line after scoring and getting fouled.

“With Jackson out with an injury, for the rest of the season we will have to step up and come together as a team. We will have to play harder and faster than ever to overcome this,” Bradley said.

Despite Gulley’s knee injury, he was the Pirates’ lead scorer with 15 total points. The team plays again December 5, at Enterprise High School. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
