Fairhope Lady Pirates defeat Robertsdale Golden Bears

FAIRHOPE, Ala. – On Thursday, March 26, the Lady Pirates competed against the Robertsdale Golden Bears at Volanta Stadium. The Pirates defeated the Bears with a score of 8-1.

Senior centerback Aubrey Ivy was ready for the senior night game, one of the several upperclassmen honored in a pre-game ceremony featuring flowers and family members on the pitch.

“Senior night was really special because of my teammates and the close friends I’ve made through soccer,” Ivy said “ We prepared for the win with music and fun shooting drills.”

Mary Marshall Roberts scored the first goal for the Lady Pirates. From the initial kick-off, the Lady Pirates were a major threat to the Robertsdale Bears goal, maintaining possession in the attacking third and  shooting the bulk of the game.

At the half the Lady Pirates were up 2-0, due to goals by Roberts and Hope Wood. Despite several saves from the Robertsdale goalkeeper, Fairhope’s persistence ensured the two goal advantage early in the game. The Pirates entered the locker room with momentum, having outshot the Bears significantly in the first 40 minutes.

Defending on the wing, Senior Pauline McDowell provided crucial support on the pitch. McDowell put pressure on Robertsdale’s offense by covering the width of the field.

“It was a very fun, exciting game that we all enjoyed,” McDowell said.

In the second half Robertsdale scored one goal to briefly tighten the score.  The Lady Pirates dominated the field scoring six goals in the second half.
